FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP
The 8th Edition
South Africa, 14 - 28 June 2009
FIFA is once again organizing the FIFA Confederations Cup, a competition which pits against each other all the continental champions the World Champions and the hosts of the coming World Cup Championship. The 2009 edition will be the 8th edition of the competition and will be hosted in South Africa. Two other Cups are regarded as precursors of this competition, although both of them are not officially recognised by FIFA: 'The Mundialito' (World Champions Gold Cup) and the 'Artemio Franchi Trophy', named after the late President of UEFA and Italian Football Federation.
The Mundialito was organised in 1980 by Uruguay on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the first World Cup. The participants were all the former World Champions with the exception of England who declined the invitation and were replaced by the Netherlands. The Artemio Franchi Trophy was played twice, in 1985 and 1993 between the European and South American Champions. The competition was a one-off game hosted once in Europe and once in South America.
The first two editions of the Confederations Cup were held in 1992 and 1995. They were called the Intercontinental Championship and were organised by Saudi Arabia between invited continental champions and the winner was awarded the 'King Fahd Trophy', named after the King of Saudi Arabia, King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud. In 1997 FIFA took over the Intercontinental Championship, renamed the competition 'FIFA Confederations Cup', recognised the first two editions and started organising the competition every two years between all continental champions and the World Champions or their runners-up . In 2005 FIFA reorganised the competition so as to become a dress-rehearsal of the coming World Cup Tournament. To this effect, the FIFA Confederations Cup is now played every four years, a year before the World Cup and is hosted by the same nation that will host the coming World Cup tournament using half the stadiums to be used in the coming World Cup.

HISTORY pages:
This is the the first participation of Italy in the Confederations Cup, although the Italian Football Federation had turned down a previous invitation to participate in the 2003 (6th) edition, the last edition before the tournament's reorganisation by FIFA. That edition was hosted in France, who were also the European Champions, thus another nation was needed to represent Europe (UEFA). Germany as Runner-up World Champions were invited by they turned down the offer as did Italy who were at the time the Runner-up European Champions. Finally UEFA was represented by the third-placed nation in the previous world cup - Turkey.
